Processors, also known as CPU, Central Processing Unit or Microprocessors, are the main component in any computer, since it's the one responsible with executing all your programs. In the previous years the higher the frequency displayed on the product the better was the performance output of the processor, nowadays though a new trend emerged by integrating more and more processing units into a single processor, a good example being Intel's Quad line.
Although there are many manufacturers of different types of processors for our home computers the largest ones are Intel and AMD. Even Apple migrated from their Mac's PowerPC architecture to the platform provided by Intel in 2006. The battle for prices and performance between these two main competitors proves good for consumers in the past years, the "crown" changing hands between the two often.
